Massive inflatable ‘Breathing Flower’ blooming on MFA’s lawn

A massive inflatable flower will bloom at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston on Wednesday as the institution welcomes a new larger-than-life installation on its Huntington Avenue lawn.

South Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa’s “Breathing Flower,” which is almost 20 feet wide, is set to be installed Wednesday afternoon.

Its long petals in the shape of a lotus flower “will gently move and glow from within,” according to a release from the museum.

The flower is part of an exhibition from Asian artists called “Megacities Asia.” The roster of works featured include pieces from celebrated Chinese provocateur Ai WeiWei.

“Megacities Asia, the largest contemporary exhibition ever presented at the MFA, invitesvisitors to walk under, through, along, around or inside large-scalesculptures and installations that examine issues of urbanization,” the release said.

The exhibition runs April 3 – July 17.

“Breathing Flower” is the just latest inflatable artwork to arrive in Boston. The Lawn on D in the Seaport was the site of an installation of towering blow-up bunnies in July.
