Mayfair apartment tenants return home

It was a bittersweet day for displaced residents of Mayfair Place as they moved back into their apartments Thursday.

Most residents were relieved to be home, but for many it was the first time they were allowed to survey the damage to their belongings after a power surge almost two weeks ago.

“I’m happy to be home and I am grateful they were able to process my claims quickly and kindly,” resident Craig Gerlitz said.

“They didn’t give us a timeline to get our stuff back, though, and my computer, well, I’d certainly like it back sooner than later. But overall, things have been good.”

Mount Royal University criminal justice student Cale Peters, 20, took the day off school to move his belongings back into his apartment.

“This whole experience has been really annoying, actually, because to be honest, I was trying to get out of my lease before this happened,” he said, adding there have always been electrical issues in the building.

“But it will be nice to move my stuff back in and live close to school and work again. Living out of a hotel in Shawnessy was inconvenient.”
