Mayor coy on $57M share of centre’s cost

While Mayor Peter Kelly is waiting for the official numbers to be released by the province, he admitted the trade centre price tag revealed this week is “within the ballpark” of previous estimates.

“We don’t know how accurate that number is or is not, we don’t know what other options may or may not be there,” he said.

“The fact is that (the number) is an individual’s opinion that they’ve brought forward.

“We don’t know if that number is accurate or not, and I’m not going to speculate whether it’s accurate or not.”

That individual, of course, is MLA Howard Epstein.

Epstein, along with the rest of the NDP caucus, was confidentially briefed on the trade centre by the minister responsible for reviewing the bid, Bill Estabrooks.

Epstein told a reporter the municipality and the province are being asked to spend $57 million each toward the proposed new trade centre.
