Mayor taps new head of FDNY

Mayor Bloomberg yesterday tapped FDNY Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano as the city’s new fire commissioner as of Jan. 1.

Cassano, a 40-year FDNY veteran, will succeed Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta who is retiring.

The mayor said Cassano, 64, was chosen for his record and “vision for the future of the FDNY.”
