Mayoral forum streaming live to city students

The live stream of potential mayors sparring head-to-head in a candidate’s youth forum is coming to a computer near you today.

Almost 1,400 students are already signed up to watch the Youth Can Vote mayor’s forum in the classrooms of 30 city schools, according to the organization official Ros Doi.

“Our event is (tying) to get youth who may not be able to vote yet engaged, and then when it comes time for them to vote, they will be informed on the issues and the process,” Doi said.

The forum will be held at the Calgary Science School, where outreach coordinator Neil Stephenson pitched the idea to stream the forum live to anyone who wants to watch it, but particularly in schools.

“We’re really excited and the kids are really excited to hear we have so many students who will be watching,” Stephenson said.

“It’s the first time we’ve done anything like this. It’s good because the kids are really into social media and who is using it and using it the best. It’s a chance for the students to learn (about) the candidates and their platforms.”
