MBTA riders get rowdy on Reddit

Etiquette is important.

Etiquette in confined public places like the T is even more important.

Way back when, during the summer, Metro brought you a story about MBTA manners with suggestions from a professional about how people should act while riding on the trains and buses.

They were pretty basic: Don’t pick your nose, keep smelly foods off the ride, and please, clip your nails in the bathroom at home, people.

But clearly, for some transit goers, those suggestions went in one ear and out the other. Or those people were too busy picking their earwax and didn’t hear us.

Before it was just a professional’s opinion letting you know what was proper on public transportation, but now the riders are speaking out.

In a thread on Reddit that has garnered more than 225 responses in just a few days, riders are talking about their biggest gripes on the MBTA and what bothers them most about their fellow commuters.

The thread’s creator asked riders “What do people do on the MBTA that drives you crazy?”

The biggest response? People hate when others stand directly in the doorway of a train, preventing them from getting on.

So listen up. Maybe you are guilty of some of these shenanigans on the MBTA.

The Rainbow Connection: “I saw a guy on the E line a few weeks ago who was playing Angry Birds on his iPad with the volume on high. This was during evening rush hour.”

MC Flat: “Backpacks are the worst. Also dudes who sit in a seat with their legs spread wide. I mean c’mon dude.

Whyutellmelies: “Patrons who won’t offer up their seat to an elderly person or to a woman who is pregnant. Makes me raaaaaaage!”

Unodostres: “STROLLERS. DURING RUSH HOUR.”

DIZASTIX: “People who are sitting on the outside seat next to you on the bus and when your stop comes instead of getting up they stay in their seat and shift sideways so you have to squeeze by them.”

Chazferrari: “Also this doesn’t really apply to normal T passengers, but I cannot stand the folks who ask you for money on the train itself. First person that comes to mind is the sob story guy.”

Rafuzo2: “I remember one time I heard a woman get on the train and mutter under her breath “No seats? THIS SUCKS I WISH I WERE DEAD.” But clearly loud enough for everyone to hear in the mostly silent 7am train. Me and a couple other commuters tried to not make each other laugh.”
