McCormick closes in on leader with Nova Scotia win

The Parts Canada Superbike championship is still up for grabs after the tour’s lone stop in Nova Scotia.

Brett McCormick of Saskatoon led 21 of 22 laps around the 2.56-kilometre track at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie yesterday, gaining 10 points on series leader and three-time defending champ Jordan Szoke.

Szoke has 296 points and McCormick 282 heading into the tour’s final stop on Sept. 6 in Shannonville, Ont.

“The first couple of laps were pretty exciting,” McCormick said in a news release. “I got a great start but Jordan’s was a little bit better. We used softer compound tires and I wanted to check out early in the race and manage the gap from there.”

McCormick, 17, won in 26 minutes, 13.8 seconds with an average speed of 134.818 kilometres per hour.

Clint McBain of Cochrane, Alta., finished third and hometown favourite Brian Blaauwendraat of Truro turned in a career-best performance by placing fourth overall.

“Everything was great but I was getting a little tired,” he said. “On this track, you’re working the whole time. Clint was a little far off and I knew I couldn’t catch him.”

Yesterday’s race will be aired on TSN tomorrow at 2 p.m.
