It was a Monday just like any other for Jets quarterback Greg McElroy, who was No. 3 on the team’s roster this time last week.
No matter that he might be making his first NFL start in six days, McElroy still went to the team facility, had breakfast, worked out and watched film from Sunday’s game. And for the first time in his NFL career, the game film included himself.
In speaking to the media yesterday, head coach Rex Ryan said no decision is forthcoming on the starter for this weekend’s game in Jacksonville. If McElroy knows something, he isn’t tipping his hand.
“No, no indication — no information at this point obviously. That’s going to come, I assume, in the next few days. I know coach Ryan and [offensive coordinator Tony] Sparano and everybody involved, they’re going to make the decision that’s best for the team,” McElroy said. “I think we all feel comfortable with their decision and we all are looking forward to what the decision may be.”
For the first time in his NFL career, McElroy heads into the week with the possibility of starting.
“It doesn’t change any approach at all obviously. You love this game, you play this game a long time, you’re always going to approach it the same way. Whether I was in high school as a backup, whether in college you’re a backup or a starter and especially at this level, you just approach it the same. It doesn’t change anything,” McElroy said. “Whether you’re a third-string quarterback, second-string quarterback, starter, you always have to prepare the same because you never know when your opportunity’s going to come. I think you have to take every opportunity that you possibly have and you try to make the most of it and when that opportunity’s there you better be prepared because you don’t know when you’re going to get another one.”
