A member of the Medford High School community has been diagnosed with tuberculosis, school officials announced Friday.

Officials emphasized that the disease does not spread easily, so only those who had very close contact with the infected person are in danger of having been exposed, WHDH reported.

Parents learned of the case through a letter sent home with students from Superintendent Roy E. Belson.

The Department of Public Health and the Medford Board of Health are both looking into the case. Anyone identified as a potential risk will be evaluated, according to a statement from the school.

School officials wouldn’t say if a student or staff member was infected, citing privacy laws.

So far, no other infections are known.

In 2015, there were 192 reported cases of tuberculosis in the Bay State, according to the Massachusetts Department of Health.
