A Massachusetts man died Sunday while hiking New Hampshire’s Mount Monadnock.

Bryce Griswold, 48, was descending the mountain in Jaffrey when he collapsed and became unconscious due to a medical condition, the N.H. Fish and Game Department told the Keene Sentinel.

Griswold, of Mendon, was hiking with a friend who is an EMT. However, attempts at CPR did not revive Griswold.

Griswold was on Red Spot Trail, near the intersection of the Old Ski path, when he was stricken, at about 4:45 p.m, said the Sentinel.

According to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, Mount Monadnock ranks alongside Japan’s Mount Fuji as one of the most popular hiking mountains in the world. The 3,165-foot peak was designated a Natural National Landmark in 1987.

Avid hikers and conservationists who visit the area in droves are often referred to as “Monadnophiles.”
