A Dorchester man who allegedly tried to burn down a Boston masonic lodge was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Kevin Jones, 31, was ordered to undergo an evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital during his arraignment on Tuesday, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office.
Jones allegedly walked into the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts, located on Tremont Street across from the Public Garden, and attempted to burn it down at about 7:45 p.m. Monday . He sprayed some type of liquid on to some of the furniture and then tried to ignite it, according to the Boston Fire Department.
A security officer at the masonic lodge detained Jones until Boston police arrived at the scene and arrested him.
Jones faces a charge of attempting to burn a building. He also faced a charge of causing damage to a church, synagogue or other place of worship, but prosecutors will file paperwork to drop that charge because the law does not cover fraternal organizations.
