I woke up at 5 a.m., for a 7:24 a.m. descent from the Sun Life Building for this year’s Easter Seals Drop Zone.
I’m not a real fan of heights and I was soon to stare down a 375’ foot rappel — albeit for a great cause.
I arrived, signed in, and went up the elevator to the prep room, where they geared me up, and gave me some final words of encouragement — “You’ll do great.”
Up to the rooftop I went and still, everything was kosher. I remember thinking, “Nice view, even with the clouds and rain.”
Then the call comes, “Who’s next?” I looked at my watch, “Shoot, that’s me.” I sheepishly inch forward; they fasten me to all the rigging, and then asked me to back out on to the ledge.
What?
Toes on the ledge, butt hanging over 4th Ave, I took that fateful first step. Not so bad after that first step.
Needless to say — thanks to the folks from Crux Climbing and the team from RATT — I made it safely to the bottom.
