Metro Minute at Ireland Park

Have some time to kill before your Porter flight to Ottawa? Perfect. You’re just around the corner from a bit of underappreciated culture. Ireland Park officially opened three summers ago to commemorate the tens of thousands of Irish men, women and children who fled the Great Famine in 1847, and arrived at the shores of Lake Ontario. Sitting at the foot of Bathurst Street, the park features five bronze sculptures by Irish artist Rowan Gillespie and is meant to mirror a twin famine memorial in Dublin. A wall of imported limestone from Kilkenny displays the names of many who did not live to rebuild their lives in a new land.
