Mets aim to have Beltran for opener

With all the changes, the Mets could still have a familiar look on Opening Day.

The team plans to use the All-Star outfielder in its Grapefruit League game today with hopes he can suit up for the season opener Friday at Florida. Beltran has been recovering from knee surgery last year and has seen limited action in simulated games.

“Carlos said he’s feeling good and he’s ready to go,” general manager Sandy Alderson told reporters. “At some point you’ve got to move forward. I do think it’s valuable for him to play in major league games. That would be an advantage over the last couple of days.

“It does present a risk. Look, at some point you’ve got to roll the dice.”

Beltran has made just one spring training appearance with the Mets and played five innings in each of a pair of Triple-A games over the weekend.
