Mets place Jason Bay on DL

The bane of Mets fans’ existence — not to mention payroll — is hitting the disabled list again.

Left fielder Jason Bay was placed on the 15-day DL Tuesday afternoon with a fractured rib on the left side of his body. He injured himself diving for a catch in Game 2 of yesterday’s doubleheader against the Giants. He stayed in the game for two more at-bats, but was removed in the seventh inning.

X-rays were negative Monday night, but further tests Tuesday morning found the non-displaced fracture. It is unknown exactly how much time he will miss.

“Originally it felt like I jarred my shoulder a little bit,” Bay told reporters after the game Monday night.
“A few innings went on — I started having a little discomfort where I
landed on my ribs there.”

Bay is hitting .240 with three home runs and five runs batted in this season.

Bay was signed to a four-year, $66 million contract before the 2010 season. He’s missed time to injuries every season and has hit just .251 with 21 homers in the three seasons he’s been on the Mets.
