With Steven Matz, recently New York’s top minor league prospect looking like a pro in Queens, the rest of the farm system is looking to make a similar impact on the big league roster. The current slew of top five Mets’ prospects are all offensive players, and some of them have been slumping a bit since our last look down at the farm two weeks ago. Here’s a brief look at New York’s top prospects and how they’ve fared in recent games:
Dominic Smith, Double-A Binghamton
It’s been a little bit of good and a little bit of bad for 20-year-old first baseman Smith, who has seen his average fall10 points over his last 10 games — batting at a .243 average in that span. But, remarkably in this day and age, Smith did not get wrung up for a single strikeout in 37 of his most recent at bats. Amed Rosario, Single-A Port St. Lucie
Rosario, also 20-years-old, has been slumping as well. Since jumping off to a .328 average back on May 11, the shortstop has hit .231 over his last 10 games, dropping his average to .307. Still, his 27 RBI and 10 stolen bases are rather impressive, as is his six triples. Gavin Cecchini, Triple-A Las Vegas
Cecchinihas not had an at bat since May 6, as he was put on the disabled list recently.He has a history of being hurt, which is not good news for Mets fans.He does have a.294 batting average in the highest level of minor league ball. Brandon Nimmo, Triple-A Las Vegas
Waiting for some good news? Nimmo is it. He’s been red-hot of late, lifting his batting average from .266 on May 9 to .281 this weekend, hitting over .300 during the stretch. He’s also added seven walks in his last 39 at bats, improving his on-base percentage to .354. Wuilmer Becerra, Single-A Port St. Lucie
Remember when the 21-year-old was pummeling with a .404 average? Well, he’s come to earth after hitting .225 since. He has a more realistic .360 batting average and a recent four-game hit streak getting him back on track.
