The New York Mets continue to disassemble their once-promising roster in 2017 as they traded veteran outfielder Curtis Granderson and cash considerations to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.
New York will receive either cash considerations or a player to be named later.
A fan favorite and role model among Mets supporters, the 36-year-old spent three-plus seasons in Queens as a productive power bat despite falling out of favor at times within a crowded outfield that included Yoenis Cespedes, Michael Conforto and Jay Bruce, who was traded to the Cleveland Indians earlier in the month.
The Mets have also dealt Addison Reed (Red Sox), Neil Walker (Brewers) and Lucas Duda (Rays) within the last month.
While Granderson’s average was sub par at .239, he hit 20 or more home runs in each of his three full seasons with the club, including 30 last season, the most he’s hit in a single year since launching 43 with the cross-town rival Yankees in 2012.
One of his finest moments with the team came in the 2015 World Series when he cracked a two-run home run in Game 3 to help deliver the team’s only win of the Fall Classic:
In 111 games this year, Granderson was batting .228, which is on pace to be a career worst, with 19 home runs and 52 RBI.
Now, the veteran has an opportunity to win his first-ever World Series ring with the Dodgers, who are on pace to put up the greatest season in baseball history.
With 42 games remaining, the Dodgers are 86-34, just 30 wins off the all-time MLB record of 116 wins owned by the 1906 Chicago Cubs and 2001 Seattle Mariners.
Granderson’s presence gives Los Angeles another option in center with Joc Pederson slumping or off the bench as a valuable left-handed bat.
