Mey Akashah: Harvard professor pleads guilty in Bermuda to hiding marijuana in underwear

A Harvard professor pleaded guilty yesterday after being found hiding marijuana in her underwear during a trip to Bermuda.

Mey Akashah, 36, of Boston, pleaded guilty and was released without a fine on a conditional discharge, according to The Royal Gazette in Bermuda.

Akashah flew from Boston to Bermuda Friday on a trip with her husband and was discovered with the drug by a police dog as the couple went through Customs, according to the news outlet.

She was hiding six grams of marijuana in a plastic bag in her groin area.

According to a Harvard faculty directory, Akashah is an instructor of environmental health at the Harvard School of Public Health.

A School of Public Health spokeswoman said Akashah graduated from there with a doctoral degree in 2011.

“She holds a temporary appointment of instructor at Harvard School of Public Health. The appointment began January 1, 2012 and has always had an end date of May 31, 2012. Due to human resources and privacy rules, we will not discuss whether or not there will be any disciplinary action,” a Harvard statement said.

Akashah told police she was prescribed the drug by a doctor in California after having surgery. She said her doctor could provide a note.
