It wasn’t turkey, but the ham, scalloped potatoes and veggies more than made up for it last night during the Mustard Seed’s Thanksgiving dinner at its southeast location, according to clients.
Over 300 people enjoyed 500 servings of the Thanksgiving staples, as well as salad and dessert during the 25th annual event, according to spokesperson Courtney Fliss.
“We are seeing an increase in the number of people coming in, probably because of the weather, recession and affordable housing situation,” Fliss said.
“It’s important for them because some of them don’t have families or support, so this becomes their home and their family, especially during the holidays.”
Client Mike Vandeleek agreed with Fliss, saying he is grateful for the dinner year after year.
“I wouldn’t be enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner if it wasn’t for this. It’s great, even without the turkey,” he joked. “It means a lot to a lot of people to eat and play some games.”
Fliss said the dinner wouldn’t have been possible without the help of 160 volunteers, who collectively spent 480 hours helping over the weekend.
“They are really the reason we’re here. A lot of them say it’s a two-way gift, though.”
They included Cresta Snow, who said this was her first time volunteering at the dinner, but that she hopes she and her group of friends will make it an annual event.
“It really makes you aware of how lucky you are … It’s nice to be able to come out and give back.”
