MLA Sindi Hawkins fighting leukemia for third time

Sindi Hawkins, MLA for Kelowna-Mission, is fighting leukemia for the third time, Premier Gordon Campbell said Tuesday.

The three-time Liberal MLA will start treatment “in the coming weeks.”

“As she leaves to pursue the treatment she needs, I want Sindi to know that the thoughts, prayers, and support of her friends in the B.C. legislature and across British Columbia are with her at this difficult time,” Campbell said.

Hawkins, who was first diagnosed in 2004, has raised $20 million for cancer research.

“Sindi has done incredible work for her province and community over the past 13 years as both a minister and MLA,” Campbell added. She has been a powerful voice raising awareness and support with the B.C. Cancer Foundation and as an advocate for blood and bone marrow donation.”

Hawkins’ family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the B.C. Cancer Foundation’s Sindi Hawkins and Friends education endowment fund.
