MLB Hall of Fame 2018 ballot: Chipper Jones, Jim Thome among newcomers

The National Baseball Hall of Fame revealed its 2018 Baseball Writers Association of America Hall of Fame ballot on Monday. 

In total, 33 names are featured on this year’s ballot with 17 of them being brand new to the Hall of Fame process. 

It’s an honor just to make the Hall of Fame ballot as the requirements to be put up for enshrinement consideration is explained below, via BaseballHall.org:

A. A baseball player must have been active as a player in the Major Leagues at some time during a period beginning fifteen (15) years before and ending five (5) years prior to election.

B. Player must have played in each of ten (10) Major League championship seasons, some part of which must have been within the period described in 3(A).

C. Player shall have ceased to be an active player in the Major Leagues at least five (5) calendar years preceding the election but may be otherwise connected with baseball.

D. In case of the death of an active player or a player who has been retired for less than five (5) full years, a candidate who is otherwise eligible shall be eligible in the next regular election held at least six (6) months after the date of death or after the end of the five (5) year period, whichever occurs first.

E. Any player on Baseball’s ineligible list shall not be an eligible candidate.

Here are the players up for consideration this year:

Barry Bonds: 6th year on ballot, 14-time All-Star, 7-time NL MVP, 762 HR (1st in MLB history)

Chris Carpenter: 1st year on ballot, 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner, 144-94 career record

Roger Clemens: 6th year on ballot, 11-time All-Star, 7-time Cy Young Award winner, 1986 AL MVP, 354-184 career record

Johnny Damon: 1st year on ballot, 2-time All-Star, .284 batting average, 2,769 hits, 408 stolen bases

Vladimir Guerrero: 2nd year on ballot, 9-time All-Star, 2004 AL MVP, .318 BA, 449 HR, 1,496 RBI, 2,590 hits

Livan Hernandez: 1st year on ballot, 2-time All-Star, 1997 World Series MVP, 178-177 career record

Trevor Hoffman: 3rd year on ballot, 7-time All-Star, 601 saves (2nd in MLB history), 2.87 ERA

Orlando Hudson: 1st year on ballot, 2-time All-Star, .273 BA, 1,319 hits

Aubrey Huff: 1st year on ballot, 2008 Silver Slugger Award winner, .278 BA, 242 HR, 1,699 hits

Jason Isringhausen: 1st year on ballot, 2-time All-Star, 300 saves, 3.64 ERA

Andruw Jones: 1st year on ballot, 5-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove winner, 434 HR, 1,289 RBI

Chipper Jones: 1st year on ballot, 8-time All-Star, 1999 NL MVP, 2008 NL batting champion, .303 BA, 468 HR, 2,726 hits

Jeff Kent: 5th year on ballot, 5-time All-Star, 2000 NL MVP, .290 batting average, 277 home runs, 2,461 hits

Carlos Lee: 1st year on ballot, 3-time All-Star, .285 BA, 358 HR, 2,273 hits

Brad Lidge: 1st year on ballot, 2-time All-Star, 225 saves, 3.54 ERA

Edgar Martinez: 9th year on ballot, 7-time All-Star, 2-time AL batting champion, .312 BA, 309 HR, 2247 hits

Hideki Matsui: 1st year on ballot, 2-time All-Star, 2009 World Series MVP, .282 BA, 175 HR, 1,253 hits

Fred McGriff: 9th year on ballot, 5-time All-Star, .284 BA, 493 HR, 2,490 hits

Kevin Millwood: 1st year on ballot, 1-time All-Star, 2005 AL ERA champion, 169-152 record

Jamie Moyer: 1st year on ballot, 1-time All-Star, 269-209 record, 4.25 ERA, 2,441 strikeouts

Mike Mussina: 5th year on ballot, 5-time All-Star, 7-time Gold Glove winner, 270-153 record, 3.68 ERA, 2,813 strikeouts

Manny Ramirez: 2nd year on ballot, 12-time All-Star, 2004 World Series MVP, .312 BA, 555 HR (15th in MLB history), 2,574 hits

Scott Rolen: 1st year on ballot, 7-time All-Star, 1997 NL Rookie of the Year, 8-time Gold Glove winner, 316 HR

Johan Santana: 1st year on ballot, 4-time All-Star, 2-time Cy Young Award winner, 3-time ERA champion, 139-78 record, 3.20 ERA

Curt Schilling: 6th year on ballot, 6-time All-Star, 2001 World Series co-MVP, 216-146 record, 3,116 srikeouts

Gary Sheffield: 4th year on ballot, 9-time All-Star, 1992 NL batting champion, .292 BA, 509 HR, 2,689 hits

Sammy Sosa: 6th year on ballot, 7-time All-Star, 1998 NL MVP, 609 HR (9th in MLB history), 2,408 hits

Jim Thome: 1st year on ballot, 5-time All-Star, 612 HR (8th in MLB history), 2,328 hits

Omar Vizquel: 1st year on ballot, 3-time All-Star, 11-time Gold Glove winner, 2,877 hits

Billy Wagner: 3rd year on ballot, 7-time All-Star, 422 saves, 2.31 ERA, 1,196 strikeouts

Larry Walker: 8th year on ballot, 5-time All-Star, 3-time NL batting champion, 7-time Gold Glove winner, 1997 NL MVP, .313 BA, 383 HR, 2,160 hits

Kerry Wood: 1st year on ballot, 2-time All-Star, 1998 NL Rookie of the Year, 86-75 record, 3.67 ERA

Carlos Zambrano: 1st year on ballot, 3-time All-Star, 132-91 record, 1,637 strikeouts

 

The results of the election will be made public on Jan. 24 with the enshrinees being inducted into the Hall of Fame on Jul. 29 in Cooperstown, NY.
