Anthony Rendon hit a grand slam to break a sixth-inning tie, and Patrick Corbin allowed two runs in six innings as the Washington Nationals beat the visiting Atlanta Braves 6-3 on Monday.
Rendon (2-for-5) lofted a shot to left off reliever Chad Sobotka for his 125th career homer and the third grand slam of his career. That gave him 500 RBIs in the majors with 23 homers and 80 RBIs this season. He leads major league third basemen with a 1.020 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.
Corbin (9-5) allowed five hits and a walk while striking out eight. He has not lost since June 11. Atlanta starter Dallas Keuchel (3-4) gave up four runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
After the Braves tied the score 2-2 in the top of the sixth, Washington rallied in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Yan Gomez walked and Adrian Sanchez singled. Sobotka replaced Keuchel and struck out Trea Turner before walking Adam Eaton to load the bases. Rendon then unloaded on a 2-0 fastball.
Padres 8, Orioles 1
Fernando Tatis Jr. and Franmil Reyes hit back-to-back home runs on the first two pitches of the game, and Eric Hosmer later drove in five runs with two homers as San Diego defeated visiting Baltimore.
The Padres hit five homers in the game, with Luis Urias also connecting for his first of the season. San Diego rookie Chris Paddack (7-5) gave up a run on three hits and two walks, with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
David Hess (1-10), who was recalled from Triple-A to make the start, gave up four of the five San Diego home runs. He was charged with five runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
Rockies 9, Dodgers 1
Jon Gray allowed three hits in eight strong innings, David Dahl homered, and Colorado beat Los Angeles in Denver.
Ian Desmond went 3-for-3 and Nolan Arenado had two hits and drove in two runs to help the struggling Rockies get a rare win over Los Angeles. Colorado, which came into the game having lost 17 of 22 in July, is now 3-8 against the Dodgers this season.
Cody Bellinger had two hits and Will Smith had a double and scored the lone run for Los Angeles.
Marlins 11, Diamondbacks 6
Miguel Rojas homered for the third straight game, leading host Miami over Arizona.
The D-backs’ Ketel Marte hit his 23rd homer of the season, a three-run blast. However, it wasn’t enough for Arizona, which lost three of four games in its series against the Marlins, who have the worst record in the National League.
Rojas has just four homers this year — all of them in the first or second inning. On Sunday, he joined Hanley Ramirez in 2006 as the only players in Marlins history to hit leadoff homers in consecutive games.
Reds 11, Pirates 6
Jose Iglesias hit a grand slam in a 10-run second inning, and Cincinnati went on to beat visiting Pittsburgh.
Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez had three hits each, and Votto also drove in two runs for the Reds. Cincinnati handed the Pirates their ninth consecutive loss, their longest losing streak since dropping 10 in a row from July 29 to Aug. 7, 2011.
Reds starter Sonny Gray (6-6) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and six hits. Alex McRae (0-3) made the first start of his major league career and allowed seven runs (five earned) and six hits in 1 1/3 innings. He walked two and didn’t record a strikeout.
Blue Jays 7, Royals 3
Cavan Biggio hit a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning and added an RBI single in a three-run ninth as visiting Toronto defeated Kansas City.
Teoscar Hernandez also hit a solo home run and Randal Grichuk hit a two-run shot and had three RBIs for the Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series. Tim Mayza (1-1) pitched around a single in the seventh inning to earn the win.
Royals starter Brad Keller (7-10), who had won his three previous starts and four straight decisions, allowed four runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out five in seven-plus innings.
Tigers 7, Angels 2
Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in three runs, Jordan Zimmermann earned his first victory of the season, and Detroit beat Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif. In the first inning, Cabrera hit his sixth homer of the season. He added a two-run, bases-loaded single in the eighth to stretch the Tigers’ lead to 5-2.
Zimmermann (1-8) hadn’t won in his previous 13 starts this year. He also was winless in his final four starts last year, but he managed to keep the Angels’ offense in check, giving up two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings for his first victory since Sept. 5, 2018.
JaCoby Jones, Harold Castro and Jordy Mercer each had two hits for Detroit. Kole Calhoun hit his third homer in six games for the Angels.
