Zack Wheeler tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout against his former team as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Mets 3-0 on Sunday, completing a series sweep.
Wheeler (10-6) continued to make a strong case for the National League Cy Young Award. He walked one and struck out 11, his sixth time this season striking out at least 10. He now leads the majors with 181 strikeouts.
Jean Segura, J.T. Realmuto and Bryce Harper each homered for the red-hot Phillies, who have won a season-best eight in a row. It marks their longest winning streak since 2011, also the last year the team made the postseason.
The reeling Mets were swept by the Phillies, one series after dropping three of four to the Miami Marlins. The Phillies picked up seven games in the standings over the Mets over the past eight days. Mets starter Taijuan Walker (7-7) allowed four hits and three runs in six innings, while Brandon Nimmo had both Mets hits.
Mariners 2, Yankees 0
Kyle Seager hit a tiebreaking double with nobody out in the eighth inning and Seattle ended a 10-game road trip with a victory over New York.
The Mariners went 4-6 on the trip that featured six losses by two runs or less, including the first three contests in this four-game series.
The Yankees saw a five-game winning streak halted after putting first baseman Anthony Rizzo on the COVID-19 list before the game. New York also lost for the third time in its past 13 games since July 25 in Boston.
Giants 5, Brewers 4
Brandon Belt ripped a two-run pinch-hit homer and Tommy La Stella came off the bench to single home the game-winner as San Francisco rallied for a victory over host Milwaukee.
San Francisco, which leads the National League West and has the best record in baseball at 71-41, came from behind to win each of the final two games of the series against Milwaukee, which leads the NL Central.
Darin Ruf hit his 13th, a solo homer in the first inning, for the Giants, who lead the majors with 169 homers. San Francisco has eight players with 10 or more homers, the most of any team in the majors.
Athletics 6, Rangers 3
Starling Marte continued his remarkable hitting since joining Oakland with four more hits and Seth Brown smacked a home run as the American League West second-place team completed a three-game sweep of visiting Texas.
Right-hander James Kaprielian (6-4) came off the injured list to combine with four relievers on a four-hitter, helping the A’s complete a 4-1 homestand. Marte’s 4-for-5 success in the series finale gave him five multi-hit outings in the nine games since he was acquired from the Miami Marlins for Jesus Luzardo.
The Rangers chipped away at the Oakland advantage when Isiah Kiner-Falefa tripled and scored in the sixth, and later homered in the eighth. The solo shot was his seventh of the season.
White Sox 9, Cubs 3
Eloy Jimenez belted two of his team’s four home runs while collecting five RBIs as the visiting White Sox topped the Cubs to complete a three-game sweep.
Dylan Cease struck out 10 in five solid innings to earn the win. Jimenez and Cease, both acquired by the White Sox in a July 2017 trade with the crosstown Cubs, shined against their former organization to lift the White Sox to their fifth win in seven games.
The Cubs have lost four straight and 10 of 12.
Rays 9, Orioles 6
Brett Phillips hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the top of the eighth to spark a six-run inning that gave visiting Tampa Bay a victory over Baltimore.
That was Phillips’ second homer of the day as the Rays swept the weekend series and now have an 11-1 record versus the Orioles this year. Tampa Bay has won four straight overall.
Baltimore has lost five consecutive games, and has allowed nine runs or more in each — giving up 54 runs in the process. Cedric Mullins joined the 20-20 club — 20 homers and 21 steals — and extended his hitting streak to 16 in a row. The center fielder is the seventh Oriole to accomplish the feat. Anthony Santander also added a homer.
Braves 5, Nationals 4
Ozzie Albies and Adam Duvall hit two-out, two-run home runs to lead Atlanta to victory against visiting Washington in the rubber game of their three-game series.
Braves left-hander Max Fried (9-7) allowed one run and seven hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked one. Chris Martin gave up a run in the ninth before earning his first save of the season.
Nationals starter Patrick Corbin (6-11) got off to a strong start, but couldn’t get the final out in the third and sixth innings before giving up the long ball. Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and two RBIs for the Nationals.
Blue Jays 9, Red Sox 8
George Springer hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning and Toronto came back to defeat visiting Boston and win the four-game series 3-1.
Springer’s 14th homer of the season came against Matt Barnes (6-4) with two out, helping the Blue Jays complete a 9-2 homestand.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 35th homer of the season, a two-run drive in the fifth, for Toronto.
Reds 3, Pirates 2
Tyler Mahle struck out 10 batters and walked none over seven strong innings as Cincinnati completed a four-game series sweep of visiting Pittsburgh.
Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos doubled to spark a three-run fourth, as the Reds won their fifth straight and 12th in 16 games, moving to a season-best 10 games over .500 at 61-51.
Ke’Bryan Hayes homered and had two hits for the Pirates, who have dropped five straight, 15 of 20 overall and nine of their 10 meetings with the Reds this season.
Indians 7, Tigers 5
Bradley Zimmer hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning and Cleveland beat visiting Detroit in the rubber match of the three-game series.
Cleveland, which trailed 5-2 at one point, moved ahead when Myles Straw singled with one out in the seventh in front of Zimmer, who capped the comeback with a 413-foot blast off Erasmo Ramirez (1-1).
Owen Miller belted a solo homer and scored two runs for the Indians, who outhit the Tigers 11-5. Jeimer Candelario doubled in a run and reached base three times for the Tigers, who have lost 10 of their first 16 meetings against Cleveland this season.
Twins 7, Astros 5
Jorge Polanco slugged a pair of home runs and Minnesota secured their first road series victory against Houston in seven years.
The Twins capped their season-long nine-game road trip by taking three of four against the Astros, who have dropped six of eight.
Minnesota improved to 5-10-5 in road series, won the season series against the Astros 4-3, and claimed its first series at Minute Maid Park since Aug 11-13, 2014.
Royals 6, Cardinals 5
Nicky Lopez hit the game-winning single in the ninth inning to lift visiting Kansas City past St. Louis.
Lopez drove in Jarrod Dyson shortly after a 2-hour, 10-minute rain delay interrupted the ninth.
Hunter Dozier went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for the Royals, who avoided a three-game sweep and finished their nine-game trip with a 3-6 record.
Rockies 13, Marlins 8
C.J. Cron hit a grand slam and a three-run homer for a career-high seven RBIs, Connor Joe also homered twice, and Colorado beat Miami in Denver.
Sam Hilliard homered among his two hits, Dom Nunez also went deep and Trevor Story had two hits for Colorado.
Cron has hit three grand slams this year, the most in a season by a Rockies player.
Dodgers 8, Angels 2
Albert Pujols hit a two-run home run against his former team and Walker Buehler pitched an effective six innings as the Dodgers earned the victory at home over the Angels.
Cody Bellinger hit a home run for the Dodgers and AJ Pollock had three hits with two RBIs one day after his 14-game hitting streak and 23-game on-base streak ended with a pinch-hit line out.
In his second career outing, Angels left-hander Reid Detmers (0-2) gave up five runs on seven hits over five innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
Padres 2, Diamondbacks 0
Blake Snell struck out 13 Diamondbacks and gave up just two hits in seven shutout innings and Jake Cronenworth drove in both runs with a single and a home run as San Diego scored a victory over visiting Arizona in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Snell dominated the Diamondbacks in a pitching duel with Madison Bumgarner.
Snell (6-4) matched his career high with the 13 strikeouts and teamed with Saturday starter Yu Darvish to set a little Padres history. Darvish had 12 strikeouts in seven innings Saturday — marking the first time in Padres history that two individual pitchers had 12 or more strikeouts in back to back games.
