Montreal man facing beheading in Saudi Arabia alleges confession was tortured out of him

MONTREAL – A Montreal man facing beheading in Saudi Arabia has written to Prime Minister Stephen Harper alleging he was tortured into confessing to a crime he says he didn’t commit.

Mohamed Kohail says he gave the letter to Calgary MP Deepak Obhrai when the latter visited him in Saudi Arabia last December. In the one-page letter, Kohail implores Harper to play a more active role in his case and to do whatever he can to help him.

Kohail also talks about having lost all his hair and having experienced various health problems since being imprisoned two years ago.

Kohail and a Jordanian friend were convicted of murder after Munzer Al-Hiraki was killed in an after-school brawl in January 2007.

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Judicial Council is currently studying a decision by a lower court that upheld Kohail’s death sentence.
