Mooseheads pick up ‘big brother’ in swap with Olympiques

The Halifax Mooseheads expect Spencer Metcalfe to be a “big brother” for a team filled with youngsters.

The Mooseheads brought in the 19-year-old blue-liner yesterday via trade from the Gatineau Olympiques, also acquiring 18-year-old forward Jordan Costello and 19-year-old goalie Anthony Kimlin for a 2011 eighth-round draft pick.

Metcalfe, a 6-foot-1, 186-pounder, had 50 penalty minutes in 25 games last season and dropped the gloves with feared tough guys Ashton Bernard and Mike Thomas.

“We’ve got a lot of young hockey players on our team, and it could be a real long season for them if we don’t have a big brother backing them up,” said Mooseheads head coach and general manager Cam Russell. “You can really expose yourself if you go young and you don’t have any toughness.”

Costello and Kimlin will have to win spots at training camp.

The pick will be upgraded to a seventh-rounder if any of the three skates in a regular-season game with Halifax.
