Mooseheads set to make some cuts

The Halifax Mooseheads have an overcrowded roster and Cam Russell plans to do something about it.

The head coach and general manager could clear at least two spots as early as this morning because the team is carrying 26 players, not including call-up Jamie Bishop.

Forward Lester Brown, an 18-year-old free agent who has appeared in one game, and Matthew Stoddard, a 19-year-old forward from Porters Lake who has sat out half of the team’s games, are among those on the bubble.

The team is also carrying nine defencemen, but jobs may be spared there until next month, when rookie standout Konrad Abeltshauser should be recovered from a broken wrist.

“We’re carrying a lot of guys on our roster and we’re gonna have to trim our roster down,” Russell said.

The last-place Mooseheads have a 1-13-1 record. They visit the Bathurst Titan on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and host the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday at 7 p.m. on “Pink in the Rink” night to raise funds for breast cancer research.
