The animal-rescue mission continued in fire-ravaged Slave Lake this weekend, with the Edmonton Humane Society recovering 50 more pets from the wreckage.
“Remarkably, we haven’t found an animal that required serious medical care,” said EHS spokesperson Shawna Randolph. “We’ve only come across two animals that had burns. They were both cats. One required some antibiotic ointment on its paws.”
Seventy animals that were being housed at the Edmonton Expo Centre were moved to the EHS shelter as well, bringing the total number of rescued animals in their care to 120.
“The rescue effort has been so rewarding,” Randolph said yesterday. “We have matched so many animals to their owners, but it is still a tragic situation.”
Most of the owners cannot come to pick up their lost pets, since people are still without homes and are dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.
