More police on Southie beach

After a crowd of hundreds had to be dispersed from Carson Beach following a fight Monday, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said city police will assist State Police there, although the beach is state jurisdiction.

“Their tactics have to be in line with Boston Police tactics,” said Menino, who spoke during a news conference on other matters yesterday. He repeatedly said the area was State Police jurisdiction.

State Police said the “unprecedented volume” of young people who gathered at the beach Monday led to the now indefinite surge in police presence in South Boston.

“State Police resources will be flexible and mobile and … will be able to respond quickly to any areas where trouble occurs,” State Police said.

Police said they had to disperse hundreds of young people from the beach and nearby T stations each day between Friday and Monday. On Sunday and Monday, State Police said more than 1,000 young people were at the beach and the crowd grew because of the use of text messages and social networking sites to “coordinate their presence.”

However, Menino disagreed with the estimate and said the crowd was maybe in the hundreds.

Nine arrests were made over the long weekend.
