Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services dealt with more tricksters than friendly spirits this Halloween.
Crews responded to more than 30 fires — all of which appeared to be deliberately set — Saturday night, said Capt. Gabe Roder of the Vancouver Fire Department.
“It was just another typical, normal Halloween night,” he said.
Most of the fires were sparked by improper firework use. Roder said problems arose when irresponsible individuals chose to use fireworks in a “nasty way.”
Five vehicles were set on fire. Mischief-makers also targeted dumpsters, portable toilets, hedges, mailboxes and billboards.
There were no major structural fires.
In anticipation of a busy night, the department manned extra trucks and sent prevention officers to patrol the streets. The majority of incidents occurred in the city’s southeast corner, Roder said.
While the Vancouver Police Department’s Counter Attack program busted three people for impaired driving, the VPD has not reported any other major incidents.
