More than just an action hero

Sam Worthington is being set up to be the next big action star, but for now he’s more concerned with finding a place to live. “I go where the work is,” he admits. “I don’t have a real home.”

Hoping to start a career hot streak, Worthington opens this weekend in Terminator Salvation alongside Christian Bale. And over the next year, he’ll be popping up in a number of other high-profile projects. “I’m doing as much as I can until people realize I’m a sham,” he says, grinning.

Four years ago, director James Cameron tapped Worthington to star in the much-hyped Avatar, which is still in post-production. So the actor sold his home and everything in it, packed up two bags and left to film in Los Angeles and New Zealand. “I’ve still only got two bags — a bag of books and a bag of clothes. That’s about it,” he says with a shrug.

But Worthington isn’t complaining. Far from it — he’s enjoying getting to play on big sets and promote massive studio films. “You don’t get into this profession for your movies not to be seen, to just show them to your mates at home,” he says. “I like the fact that people are going to get to see my work and then, fingers crossed, hopefully like what I’m producing. We’ll soon find out, won’t we? Or I won’t be working next year.”

Speaking of next year, Worthington is currently filming a remake of the ’80s Greek mythology epic Clash of the Titans, due next March — “I’m running around in a dress killing everything” is how he describes it. But he hopes audiences can see him as more than just an action hero. “I don’t mind taking a few knocks. I’m a boy. But hopefully it’s not just, ‘Sam’s an action dude.’ That’s not what I want,” he says.

Still, while filming Last Night, a relationship drama with Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes, Worthington didn’t quite get the same thrill. “I craved a gun and a sword, to be honest with you,” he says. “It was bizarre. In the kissing scenes, I wasn’t getting the same kind of rush.”
