Mother of abandoned baby didn’t know of pregnancy: Police

Police say the woman accused of leaving her newborn baby boy in a northwest townhouse dumpster told them she didn’t know she was pregnant.

Staff Sgt. Leah Barber of the child abuse unit said it’s amazing people found the baby when they did. The newborn was initially hypothermic and sent to hospital in life-threatening condition on Tuesday after being in the dumpster for up to two hours.

“I truly believe they saved his life.”

Media reports have suggested the father was the one who initially found the baby.

The woman is undergoing a psychiatric assessment but her name is being withheld to protect the identity of the baby.

“Information suggests the woman was not aware of the pregnancy prior to birth,” Barber said, but she couldn’t elaborate.

The woman gave birth in the Queen’s Park Village townhouse complex, where she lives, and she was brought to hospital a short while after the baby was born.

Although she and the baby’s father are a couple, the father didn’t know the woman was pregnant until officials told him, police said.

Barber said she has never seen anything like this since she took her position over two years ago.

“It’s not common,” she said.
