When I was little I asked my mom why there was a Mother’s Day and not a Kid’s Day. She, of course, said it was because every day was Kid’s Day. The older I get the more I realize how right she was.
Though I’m positive my booze appreciation gene came from her side of the family, Mom isn’t much of drinker. She does enjoy a glass of cream liqueur (served over ice), so come Mother’s Day I try and surprise her with something different.
Ireland’s Bailey’s is the benchmark for everything creamy so you’d think they’d leave well enough alone. Nope. Bailey’s Mint Chocolate ($27.99 – $29.99) takes the original Irish whiskey-based recipe and actually enhances it with minty mocha flavours, while Amarula Cream ($25.95 – $27.95) from South Africa uses the indigenous marula fruit to make its refreshingly fruity liqueur.
The latest edition to the cream lineup is Cadbury Caramilk Liqueur ($27.99 – $29.99) from New Zealand. It’s the liquid version of the popular chocolate bar. While I don’t think there’s any secret to how they get it in the bottle; in the glass it tastes much like you’d expect if you’ve ever tasted the candy version.
