Motion Sick to death

Is Dramamine’s performance at Cafe 939 a lament or lampoon? It’s a bit of both, really, as this band-for-a-night comprised of wives, girlfriends and close femme-pals of Boson indie rockers the Motion Sick, who themselves played their “final” show Sept. 18, pay tribute with a set that not only sees Dramamine performing all Motion Sick songs, but in drag complete with Sick-style handlebar moustaches, too. Is the show something of a wake we wonder?

“It won’t be sad at all,” insists Dramamine drummer Sophia Cacciola, who is married to Sick frontman Mike Epstein. “We’re going to have fun with what is a sad occasion.”

Cacciola currently performs with Epstein in the punk-Americana duo Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling.

“Learning these songs has actually pushed me as a drummer,” she admits.

The other “girls of the Motion Sick” also have main bands: Leesa Coyne and Kelly Davidson perform in Naked On Roller Skates and Veronica Dale is in The Future Everybody.

The night’s opening acts, This Blue Heaven and Sarah RabDAU & Self-Employed Assassins, will join in the tribute and play one Motion Sick song each.

In a way, the show gives some sort of closure to the “girls of the Motion Sick.”

“It was weird when they played their final show,” Cacciola says. “It’s been a big part of all our lives, so it’s nice to have this show to thank them.”

Still in Motion

Individually, the Sickies continue for now in the shape of several bands, including The Backup Factor (Mat-thew Girard, Travis Richter), Do Not For-sake Me Oh My Darling (Epstein), The Future Everybody (Girard), The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library (Epstein), Naked on Roller Skates (Richter) and Neutral Uke Hotel (Girard, Epstein).
