Move-in week means new faces, headaches

They were dancing on Boylston Street yesterday where cars jam-packed with boxes, bedding and wide-eyed freshmen pulled up in front of Emerson College.

“Hey, everybody! Jackie’s here,” shouted an upperclassman, cueing the handful of other orientation leaders to erupt in applause and chants of “Jackie! Jackie! Jackie!”

It’s that time of year in Boston when a new crop of students arrive, some for the first time.

Emerson, Boston College, Boston University and Northeastern University students move to campus this week.

While there’s excitement on the students’ end, there’s dread for some residents of the neighborhoods near the city’s institutes of higher learning.

“We like it better without the students,” said Eric Schlott, a 20-year resident of the Fenway neighborhood surrounded by schools including Northeastern, Emmanuel and Wentworth.

“They’re not street savvy or city savvy,” he said. “They get in the way and there’s clutter. When the students are here there’s more trash. I don’t know what they do at home.”
