The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom
Director: Tara Johns
Stars: Julia Stone, Gil Bellows
Rating: ***

At the onset of puberty, pre-teen Elizabeth (Julie Stone) discovers that she is adopted. It’s devastating of course, until she reasons that Dolly Parton may be her biological mama and sets out to confront the singing legend. An impressive debut feature, The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom is punctuated with solid performances, a keen eye on the art direction of the 1970s and Canadian themes: It juggles both a coming of age tale and a road trip – two staples firmly fixed in Hollywood North’s wheelhouse.
