Nash to get some B.C. play time

Vancouver will see a lot of Steve Nash this fall as the two-time National Basketball Association MVP returns to the city for an NBA pre-season game and a charity soccer match.

The Phoenix Suns will play their second pre-season match in three years in Vancouver when they come to town Oct. 22 to take on the Portland Trailblazers.

“It’s very special,” said Nash, 35, when asked about playing before a hometown crowd. “I was very disappointed that the Grizzlies no longer play in Vancouver.

“In some ways, it’s like I was robbed of a special experience and connection to home when the team was taken … I felt bad for the fans and I felt bad for myself.”

Nash was in Vancouver for eight days earlier this summer directing a documentary on Terry Fox.

He is coming to Victoria Sept. 18 to accept and honorary doctorate of law degree from the University of Victoria. A day later, Sept. 19, Nash will host ‘Showdown in Downtown’ a charity soccer match at David Lam Park in Yaletown.
