Natalie Portman has hundreds of stories of sexual harassment in Hollywood

Natalie Portman Vulture Festival

Natalie Portman is opening up about sexual harassment in Hollywood — and how long it took her to realize that she was a victim, too.

At Vulture Festival in Los Angeles, the “Jackie” actress says reexamining her past experiences with sexism and harassment — from being isolated on set, to manipulative situations — made her see them differently. “When I heard everything coming out, I was like, wow, I’m so lucky that I haven’t had this. And then, on reflection, I was like, okay, definitely never been assaulted, definitely not, but I’ve had discrimination or harassment on almost everything I’ve ever worked on in some way,” she says.

“I went from thinking I don’t have a story to thinking, Oh wait, I have 100 stories,” she continues. “And I think a lot of people are having these reckonings with themselves, of things that we just took for granted as like, this is part of the process.”

Portman joins the ranks of women who have talked about their experiences with sexism and harassment in Hollywood, from Angelina Jolie to Gwyneth Paltrow. Here’s hoping the more women come out, the more the industry — and other industries — shift towards hearing women out.

It’s about time.
