Streaks are meant to be broken. For proof, just ask Cal Ripken. He broke the granddaddy of them all.
While this streak isn’t as historic — or long — it must seem just as insurmountable to Army, which hasn’t defeated Navy since 2001, when they won 26-17 at old Veterans Stadium. In the last three years, Army hasn’t registered a TD.
This time, however, there is a renewed sense of hope among the Black Knights. They qualified for their first Bowl game since 1996, and their option rushing attack is ranked ninth in the nation, averaging 260 yards per game.
“It takes us kind of back to a camp mentality, when we are playing against our offense and smashing skulls,” Navy senior Billy Yarborough said.
Smashing skulls. Sounds brutish, but both teams want to win by any means necessary.?Especially Army’s senior class, which is looking to become the first to beat Navy in nine years.
“I think that’s a big component as a class, that we are completing the mission we started,” said Army senior Patrick Mealy.
