NBA Rumors: Latest on LeBron James to Warriors

There is a chance that the Golden State Warriors could become an even larger juggernaut this summer.

ESPN.com’s Chris Haynes reported on Thursday morning that Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, who is set to become a free agent this summer, would meet with the Golden State Warriors if they were able to create a max-salary roster spot.

While James’ second possible departure from Cleveland has been widely discussed over the past few seasons, the prospect of joining the Warriors is a surprising twist that would add even more salt to the wound of Cavs fans having to see their franchise player leave again.

The Cavaliers have met the Warriors in each of the last three NBA Finals, with Cleveland stealing one title to ruin Golden State’s 73-win 2015-16 season.

The Warriors, with two titles over Cleveland in their back pockets, are already the strongest team in the NBA with a stacked roster featuring Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant — who have combined for three MVP awards — Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

Adding one of, if not the best player in NBA history to those ranks would further cement the team’s place as Bleacher Report began to fantasize about the possibility of James in blue and gold:

Pretty scary, right?

The Cavaliers are in disarray despite being third in the Eastern Conference. Closed-door meetings and feuds between players have created doubt around the organization. Selling James on re-signing with Cleveland would have been tough enough without locker-room issues. But a struggling team and a tarnished culture could make it all but impossible for him to come back.

So let the months of speculation and rumors continue as we wait to see if one of the best teams in NBA history throw their names into the James sweepstakes.
