New arena gets trial run with sledge hockey cup

The first international event to take place at UBC’s new Thunderbird Arena tomorrow will showcase a sport few British Columbians have seen before — ice sledge hockey.

Around 60 athletes from Canada, Germany, Japan and the United States will take to the ice to test the arena’s operational readiness before it hosts events at the 2010 Paralympic Games.

The Sledge Hockey Canada Cup runs until March 1. Individual game tickets are available for $10 each and full tournament packages, including tickets to all 10 games, are available at $50.

Canada’s sledge hockey team has won a gold, silver and bronze medal in the past four Paralympic Games.
