Bringing a reusable tote to the grocery store has long been recommended in lists of environmentally conscious behaviors.

But in New York City, it may soon be the economically conscious option as well.

A bill introduced in the City Council today would charge ten cents for every non-reusable plastic or paper bag used around the city.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said he had not seen the legislation yet, but agreed that plastic bag consumption needed to be reduced.

“Plastic bags are a problem, and our goal has to be to reduce the use of plastic bags. There’s a lot of different ways to do that. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing this legislation, but I can tell you as a societal goal, it’s something we have to work on and work on quickly,” de Blasio said on Tuesday.
