New Brunswick Power asking anyone with flu symptoms to stay home to minimize impact

FREDERICTON – Officials at NB Power are hoping to minimize the effect of the swine flu pandemic on the operation of New Brunswick’s power utility.

Signs are being posted at all NB Power offices and facilities asking employees and visitors with flu symptoms, not to enter.

Spokeswoman Heather MacLean says the utility provides a critical infrastructure so they are taking every precaution to ensure they’re able to keep the lights on.

She says if many of the company’s 2,500 employees become ill they’ll look at contingencies such as different shifts or having some employees work from home.

Dr. Eilish Cleary, New Brunswick’s chief medical officer of health, says the number of cases of the H1N1 flu virus have actually decreased in the province over the past week.

So far only three people have been hospitalized and there have been no deaths.
