New cellphone carrier Wind Mobile blows into town

The winds of wireless change are now blowing in Calgary.

Wind Mobile, which recently received the green light from the federal government to roll out wireless services across the country, will set up shop at seven locations in Calgary beginning Friday, the company announced.

And CEO Ken Campbell said that after Wednesday’s Toronto launch, Calgary was the company’s next choice to launch to show it’s a true national carrier — and it expects to meet the three prevailing carriers, Rogers, Bell and Telus, head-on.

“We certainly expect some intense competition. We didn’t get into this thinking that the incumbents sit back and take it easy. Hopefully we raise the game for all operators,” said Campbell.

“We’d like to really establish a good beachhead in Calgary and expand from that to Edmonton in January.”

Telus spokesperson Chris Gerritsen said the company is well-prepared for Wind’s rollout.

“It appears they are mimicking some of the same options and plan features we offer Telus customers, just packaged in slightly different ways,” Gerritsen said.
