New centre breaks ground at Commonwealth

Construction has begun on the new North Central Community Recreation Centre at Commonwealth Stadium.

Mayor Stephen Mandel said the new facility will change the way we look at traditional sports and recreation centres.

The project is expected to cost $112.5 million, with contributions from the City of Edmonton, the Government of Alberta and the Edmonton Eskimos.

The new recreation centre and fieldhouse will benefit amateur and professional sports groups, as well as Edmonton in the future, said a release from the City of Edmonton.

The fieldhouse and recreation centre will open to the public in early 2012, according to the release.
