New elevator to improve connections for Orange Line riders

The MBTA debuted its 144th elevator at 8:30 a.m. today., an addition that transit officials said would improve connections for Orange Line riders

The new elevator is at State Station, and connects the pedestrian passageway, on the same level as the Orange Line’s southbound platform, to the Oak Grove-bound platform below.

In addition, the adjacent existing stairway was removed and replaced in a new configuration, according to a spokesman.

As part of a 2006 lawsuit settlement, the T agreed to build more elevators at State, as well as Harvard, Porter, Downtown Crossing, and Park Street, which are considered to be “heavily traveled” stations.

The federal lawsuit filed by the Boston Center for Independent Living and 11 people accused the T of having inadequate accessibility for people with disabilities.
