New housing rules on the way?

University of Calgary students may have a little more money in their pockets soon if a city alderman has his way today.

Ward 6 Ald. Joe Connelly is putting forward a motion at council today to ease rules on secondary suites to allow them within 400 metres of C-Train platforms, which will encourage more affordable housing for students.

“It just makes sense to me and the University of Calgary Students’ Union has been very helpful and brought me forward a proposal and I’m sort of the catalyst,” Connelly said.

“I think this is the right direction for council to go, especially during an affordable housing crisis.”

Secondary suites are currently not allowed and it worries students, who often have to turn to unsafe and illegal secondary suites, according to the U of C Students’ Union.

U of C SU president Lauren Webber said the students’ union has been working closely with Connelly on the proposal and it applauds the move.

“This is so exciting and not only will it make for more affordable housing for students, but for Calgarians as a whole,” she said.
