New-look Rainmen set to get first test

The Halifax Rainmen will put their revamped roster through its first real test when they open the Premier Basketball League pre-season Friday night.

The Rainmen, who visit the Saint John Mill Rats at Harbour Station in New Brunswick at 7 p.m., have 11 newcomers among 13 on their training camp roster. The club has spent the past three weeks battling it out twice a day in practice.

“We’re anxious to get started,” said Rainmen owner Andre Levingston. “After hitting and competing against one another, guys want some new flesh. It’s going to be good for them and it’s an opportunity for us to see how they perform under the lights.”

Desmond Ferguson, an all-star small forward, will not play because of a hamstring injury. He and power forward Eric Crookshank are the team’s only returnees.

Nine players currently have contracts, while four are with the team as tryouts. Ten will make the final roster.
