New luxury movie theater officially opens in Boston’s Seaport

Boston’s ever-growing Seaport neighborhood now has its own movie theater.

After a soft launch earlier this winter, ShowPlace ICON officially opens its doors at One Seaport on Feb. 8. The new, 44,000-square-foot theater is quite the space, featuring 10 auditoriums, top-of-the-line projection technology, plus plenty of ways to chow down.

Guests can expect a truly luxury experience, complete with heated reclining seats that come with over six feet of legroom, which means no more squeezing between aisles for bathroom or snack breaks.

“With ShowPlace ICON at Seaport, we are changing the way people see movies,” ShowPlace ICON CEO Tony Kerasotes said in a statement. “We offer an escape from everyday life, a full service entertainment experience with state-of-the-art sound and technology, luxe, comfy and heated recliner seats, and a multitude of culinary options.”

The new theater hopes to provide a more upscale, intimate experience for moviegoers with auditorium sizes that range between 63 and 131 seats. Screenings after 6 p.m. will also be reserved for audiences 18 and over, so don’t expect any rowdy kids or teens to ruin your next movie night.

Aside from being a prime place to see blockbusters like “Black Panther” or “Fifty Shades Freed,” ShowPlace ICON has a beautiful hallway layout filled with a black and white photography exhibit that pays homage to Boston’s cinematic history. The theater partnered with Artists for Humanity to have special photos taken that are inspired by films like “Good Will Hunting,” “Spotlight” and more.

Guests will be able to munch on an array of gourmet snacks as well at the venue’s Lobby Lounge. The dining area can seat over 150 people and offers menu items such as ponzu salmon BLTs, bacon jam BBQ burgers, chipotle chicken sliders and more. The bar is pretty stacked too, featuring 16 types of specialty cocktails and a host of local brews, including Harpoon, Wormtown and Sam Adams.

Don’t worry, the theater didn’t forget to bring the popcorn. Moviegoers can order small bites like bacon popcorn and BBQ pork nachos off the Take 2 menu.

“ShowPlace ICON is more than a movie theatre, it is an immersive experience,” vice president of leasing at WS Development Todd Norley said in a statement. “This a remarkable draw for the Seaport, and the greatest place in the country to see a movie.”
