New paint, same drama

In 2009, Sydney Andrews appears to be alive and well — never mind the fact that she got run over by a car on her wedding day on Melrose Place 12 years ago.

These days, the blackmail expert is once again living at 4616 Melrose, now serving as landlady — and trouble-making instigator — to a new group of 20-somethings looking to make it big in Los Angeles.

Laura Leighton reprises her role as Sydney in the CW’s update of the prime-time soap opera, premiering Wednesday at 10 p.m., and it didn’t take much arm-twisting to get her back.

“I found they had an approach to the show that incorporated my character in a very unique way,” Leighton explains. “Playing Sydney the first time was such fun, and there was no downside to coming back to play her again.”

Not even the tragedy that strikes her character very early on in the new Melrose?

“I think Sydney’s always been sort of doomed to be the center of controversy, and she’s very much in that position,” Leighton admits, before adding optimistically, “You know, I think also that she’s always been destined to live in a penthouse. So here she is.”
