New regime, but same old Mets?

Forbes recently reported that the Mets’ revenues dropped 13 percent and recorded $6.2 million in operating losses. As a result, the magazine dropped the franchise’s value from $858 million to $747 million.

“Winning makes you almost forget about almost everything else,” third baseman David Wright said during spring training.

Well, then that explains why the Mets’ off-the-field troubles have been on the forefront of everyone’s minds. Ponzi schemes, aside, the team finished 79-83 in 2010, failing to reach the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

Enter GM Sandy Alderson and manager Terry Collins. The duo promised to turn the team in the right direction, but the compass may not point north until 2012, when the Mets are free of a core group including Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes, who have underachieved.

“I don’t think about … if I’m going to be here after this year, if I’m not,” Reyes said. “Just go play.”
